A 39-year-old Englishman has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after damaging a woman's property, causing unnecessary pain to animals and breaching bail conditions.
The accused, Gary John Peat, was arraigned this morning in court and charged with causing over €250 worth of damage to the property of Rose Rogers, breaching probation, breaching bail conditions, causing unnecessary pain to an animal, caused fear of violence and drunk and disorderly behaviour.
Mr Peat pleaded guilty to all charges, and also rejected to consult the court appointed legal aid Dr Mark Mifsud Cutajar.
In its judgment, Magistrate Ian Farrugia Mr Peat's full cooperation with the police, as well as his admission of guilt into consideration, however added that the nature of his crimes must also be given "substantial weight."
"Needless to say, crimes of wilful damage to property (the accused caused considerable damage to property found at Ms Roger's residence), breaching bail conditions (which bail in itself means that the Court granting bail, would be granting the opportunity to the accused to be released from arrest under certain conditions which need to be rigorously abided by), breaching protection orders, and causing unnecessarily pain to animals, must be severely addressed by the authorities, including the Courts," the judgement reads.
In light of the above, the accused was condemned to imprisonment for 18 months. Inspector Godwin Scerri prosecuted.
