Gozo, the never ending season – events for the rest of the year

Summer is nearly over, but events in Gozo are not.

After a special and successful summer full of concerts, feasts, performances and even, Gozo goes on with a new lively and brilliant calendar of events, scheduled from September onwards.

It is a fact that Gozo has an incredibly active year-round cultural life, quite remarkable for such a small place, but this year's offerings are even more attractive and rich.

Concerts, dance shows, re-enactments and festivals will make the island the place to be for both locals and foreigners in search of fun, culture, buzz and quality entertainment.

From Mġarr to Xagħra, from Qala to Victoria, Gozo will ignite the magic September nights with a list of sparkling free initiatives which are not to be missed.

Xaghra will first host Tifkira tal-Assedji on Wednesday 7th September, followed by the Festa of Maria Bambina on the 8th.

On the other side of the island, the Gozo Youth Wind Band (GYWB) will be rocking Mġarr Harbour with the 2nd Edition spectacular concert, Stage and Proms on the Sea.  Staged on a large floating platform, this concert, reminiscent of London West End shows and masterpieces from the Proms, will offer a unique Mediterranean setting under the moonlight, where the audience will be regaled with excerpts and medleys from musicals and classic pieces (for info and reservations, gozowindbandorchestra@yahoo.co.uk).

Good music will again be the main attraction on Monday 12th September in Marsalforn, when The Travellers will be performing from 9pm onwards. Being 100% Gozitan, the band plays it easy on home turf, but their songs and sounds –a mix of folk, reggae and pop- are definitely international.

Also beyond borders is the 10th edition of the Qala International Folk Festival, organized by the Qala Local Council and the Qala Menhir Folk Group. Between Friday 16th and Sunday 18th September, folk dances, music and traditional food from around the world will transform the quaint village square into a multicultural stage.

But it is Cittadella, the freshly beating heart of Gozo, that will host the most unique upcoming events. Since its embellishment was inaugurated on 30th June, the reborn Cittadella has never slept.  In fact, it has become the meeting place everybody needed, offering the perfect setting for exploring Gozo's history and spirit, as well as for kicking back with friends or taking a relaxing walk in the ditch.

Over the next few days, the Citadella will again become a relevant open air theatre, animating the narrow and historical alleys and enlivening old and new locations, thanks to the support and initiative of the Ministry of Gozo.

For the first time ever, Cittadella will become an open…Shala, i.e. a yoga room where the international renowned Yoga master Cinzia di Cioccio will demonstrate and teach everybody how to practise such an ancient activity.

In the tidal light of sunset, she will lead an open Yoga class and meditation session on the 10th at Sentinella for anyone who is interested to step into Yoga (from 6:30pm - bring your own mat). "I have never been to Gozo before", she says, "but I have heard a lot about the island and its special energy. I can't wait to practise there!" says Di Cioccio.

Gozo has for a while now been a recognised holistic destination island: many Yoga teachers, Reiki practitioners and Tai Chi masters come to lead their workshops and retreats here, and many others are even re-locating because in Gozo they find the perfect spot for meditating and reconnecting body, mind and soul.

Apart from Yoga, Cittadella will be the perfect scenario for other two big music and dance events.  On Sunday 11th September,  the 15-piece D Capital band, directed by George Apap, will perform its versatile repertoire – which includes pop, rock and jazz - in the ditch, starting from 8pm.

Friday 16th September sees a unique vision of contemporary dance by Body Art Dance Group, choreographed by M. Angelo Bonello, while tribal vibes by Tribali will shake the walls of Cittadella from the ditch, under the name of 'Umani- Raw – Flawed – Driven'.

"The inspiration comes from the  natural rhythm of life itself and the way we human beings naturally move upon earth, individually but moreover connected without doubt. So there is grace and beauty but also a definite twist, an imperfection...which just defines us even more as ...Umani", the choreographer explains.

We are all 'umani', humans, because we are all raw, flawed and driven. Most of all,  we are ready to enjoy Gozo's never-ending summer.
