Court places former Arriva driver on probation after he admitted to stealing €2,329

A court has granted an ex-Arriva bus driver one last chance to overcome his drug habit by placing him under a probation order after he was found guilty of stealing €2,329 from the company.

The accused, a 30-year-old man from Mellieha named Andre Borg, had unlawfully profited to the detriment of Arriva the sum of money entrusted to him by virtue of his role as a company driver.

In his considerations, Magistrate Neville Cammileri took note of the testimony of an Arriva representative, where it was made known that the accused had paid the sum of money back in full. He also took note of the accused's checkered criminal history, that Mr Borg had pleaded guilty and that he paid back the amount stolen in full.

The court declared Mr Borg guilty, based on a report penned by the relevant probation officer. He was placed under a probation order for three years, and committed himself to undergo a rehabilitation program to help kick his drug addiction.

In its judgment the court laid particular emphasis on the fact that this was to be the "last chance" afforded to the accused.
