
Seven migrant corpses were found on board a dinghy off Malta this afternoon, while two men who survived a sea ordeal are on their way to the island. An Armed Forces of Malta spokesman told Times of Malta two migrants, who were found severely dehydrated, had been rescued and airlifted off the dinghy. The boat was spotted by a vessel taking part in a Frontex operation between Malta and Libya. The rescue operation started at 5pm. The identity of the victims and the survivors and the circumstances which led to the tragedy is not yet known. The bodies are the victims are expected to be taken to Italy. More than 4,600 people are estimated to have died in the Mediterranean in 2016, according to the latest International Organisation for Migration report, compared to 3,777 in 2015.
