Home Affairs Minister says temporary humanitarian protection will still be issued

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela has said that the Office of the Refugee Commissioner will continue issuing temporary humanitarian protection.

The press statement argued that the statements made by the Commissioner for Children were wrong.

The minister, through a statement, said that migrants who were persecuted or who come from countries rife with civil unrest are not given temporary humanitarian protection, but are rather given refugee status or subsidiary protection, as is required by Maltese law.

Temporary Humanitarian Status, the minister said, which is given to applicants who do not qualify for the afformentioned status' however are not to be returned due to medical reasons, or due to them being minors, or for other humanitarian reasons, was not removed. "The Office of the Refugee Commissioner will continue to grant this status when it is needed."

"The only syatus that will no longer be granted is that known as 'Temporary Humanitarian Protection-New', which status was being given to ex-international protection applicants whose applications were refused as the persons in questions did not qualify, i.e. did not suffer from persecution or did not originate from countries where there is civil strife. In addition, these persons who had this particular temporary status will be given the chance to acquire a residency permit as long as they meet the conditions required by Identity Malta and relevant laws. If these people want, they can also return hime through the assisted voluntary returns scheme".

He reiterated that there is no plan to deport any children from Malta.
