A Nigerian single mother was given a suspended sentence after being found to be in possession of false documentation after travelling from Italy to Malta.
Peace Edet, 41, admitted her guilt to the charges, and made a tearful plea to Magistrate Josette Demicoli explaining that she did all of this to find employment in order to support her children, who currently reside in Italy.
Inspector Victor Aquilina, who was representing the prosecution, requested that the magistrate sentence the woman to imprisonment of minimum 6 months.
"Ever since the boarders were closed, these cases have been happening on a daily basis" he explained.
Lawyer Patrick Valentino, who represented the accused as a legal aid, told the court that the accused had fully cooperated with the police and provided them with the relevant information regarding the purchase of the false documentation.
As is the standard with such cases, the court sentenced Ms Edet to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for 3 years.
The woman was also informed that she will remain under detention with the immigration office until official documents can be found, after which she will be returned to Italy.
