"What Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna is suggesting on Islam could lead to implosion," sociologist and former Alternattiva Demokratika leader said.
Interviewed by The Malta Independent news editor Rachel Attard on INDEPTH, Dr Briguglio was answering questions in relation to what the archbishop said earlier this month that church schools have to respect religious freedom, thus confirming that he is open to the idea of non-catholic students receiving education in their own religion.
Dr Briguglio said that when he heard Archbishop Scicluna speaking on the subject his first reaction was that the church is opening up and being courageous. Dr Briguglio is however concerned that the archbishop has to give this idea a deeper thought because there are a number of repercussions.
The most important thing is that the state will still have the final say on what the church schools teach because it needs to be in conformity with what is ethical in society nowadays, he said.
The interview with Dr Briguglio will be uploaded tomorrow
