Man placed under probation for assaulting his father after being refused drug money

A 35-year-old man from Zebbug, who suffers from drug addiction, has been placed under probation for a period of two years after he admitted to assaulting his father.

The accused, David Bonnici, was charged with assaulting his father Walter Bonnici on 29 May 2013, causing him slight injury.

From the compilation of evidence, it emerged that the accused had been abusing drugs long-term, and was always asking his father for money.

On the day of the incident in question, it was reported that the accused yet again asked his father for money. When the father refused, his son pushed him to the ground and began kicking him.

Following this incident, the father then filed a report with Inspector Roderick Agius, who not only interrogated the accused but also filed charges for his arraignment.

It emerged in court that the accused attempted to complete rehabilitation programme multiple times, but had always stopped short. Magistrate Josette Demicoli, presiding over the case, placed the accused under probation in order to give him once last chance for reform.
