A 41-year-old Sicilian man named Carmelo Ciranna has been handed down a seven-year prison term, following which he would have to be deported back to Sicily, after he admitted to an extensive string of thefts.
Mr Ciranna, who resides in Qormi, was arraigned in court in mid-January, where he was accused of no less than 15 counts of theft. The accused admitted to all charges brought against him, with the thefts amounting to the value €100,000. The thefts included stolen jewelry, watches, a car battery, cash, electronics and other valuable items. Mr Ciranna pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him. It is understood that the thefts took place between December and January.
The accused has also been charged with the damage of property in relation to the thefts. Most of the items were stolen from various homes, while some had been stolen from a petrol station. It is understood that the accused admitted to the thefts in order to sustain his drug addiction.
At the time of the arraignment, the courts heard how the accused had been unemployed, that he cooperated in full with the police who are reportedly investigating others in relation to the thefts in order to recover the stolen goods.
Lawyer Noel Bartolo appeared for the accused as his legal aid. Inspectors Kurt Zahra, Christabelle Chetcuti and Elton Taliana prosecuted.
Magistrate Joe Mifsud, presiding over the case, noted the accused's "colourful" criminal record, and requested for Corradin Correctional Facility to provide the accused with the necessary treatment in order for him to kick his drug addiction. He was also ordered to pay the court expenses, amounting to €1,239.
