Election a choice between Joseph Muscat and Malta - Simon Busuttil, PN slogan: 'I choose Malta'

The 3 June election has been labelled as extraordinary by Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil, who said it will be a "choice between Joseph Muscat and Malta".

The clear choice is "I choose Malta", which is the slogan that the Nationalist Party will be using in this campaign.

Muscat has called an election more than a year before the end of the term, and this after winning the last election he obtained the largest ever win and had the largest ever majority in Parliament. He has also done so while Malta is holding the EU President.

Muscat is calling an early election because he has led the most corrupt government in the country's history. His intentions were not to create wealth for the people but for him and Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi, Busuttil said, when addressing the media hours after PM Muscat called a snap election.

Corruption has brought the country to a halt, and the solution for this was for the PM to resign because he is facing a criminal investigation, Busuttil said. Yet he chose to call an election in the hope that this will help him save his skin.

Calling an early election raises more suspicions than removes doubts, Busuttil said, adding that the PM will be doing his best to win to stop the investigation from continuing. Muscat chose his personal interests before the national interest, he said.

The PN will be keeping a close eye on the electoral process. As from today, Muscat is no longer a PM with full powers. He is only a caretaker PN, and any decisions that will be taken that could be interpreted to mean an attempt to buy votes will be considered as corrupt practices, Busuttil said.

He said that instability was created in the country because of Muscat's behaviour. If we did not have this instability, Muscat would not have called an election. People are seeing through it and through him, Busuttil said.

He was sure that the magisterial inquiry will find fault with Keith Schembri (that he received kickbacks from the sale of Maltese citizenship), given that it was he (Busuttil) that he presented the proof against him. On this alone, Muscat should shoulder his responsibility.

He said he was not surprised that Muscat opted for an early election, seeing that the accusations being levelled against him kept on mounting.
