The Nationalist Party should be giving more importance to what members of the party's committees in various localities say, PN leadership candidate Adrian Delia said.
These committees were not there only to collect membership money. They have ideas and know politics well, and as a party leader "I would give them more space to help the party draw up its policies."
Speaking on the PN's radio station in an interview with Angelo Micallef, Delia said the party has five years in which to convince the people that the PN would do a better job in government than Labour.
He expressed his satisfaction that the PN had changed its mind and allowed phone-ins during such radio programmes. "I believe the party must open all doors and windows to allow fresh air. We should not be afraid of genuine criticism and we are well equipped to deal with those who want to break up the party," he said.
He said he did not build his career on politics. "My choices led me to build a successful legal firm with my partners. Now that I gained experience in private enterprise I want to offer it to the party and the country," he said.
He added that the party must become the place where self-employed people find comfort. "We were the party of the self-employed under successive Labour governments which made their life hell. But now they have moved to Labour. We must be humble and listen to their aspirations as they face new challenges," Delia said.
He praised the document drawn up by Claudio Grech in the previous legislature, and said his (Delia's) proposals built on that. Among such proposals was the setting up of a business clinic to help businessmen in difficulty, the opening of an access point and data bank to help people keep abreast with laws and regulations in the sector and the offering of time by professionals to help entrepreneurs.
