Without mentioning his name, the Nationalist Party today rebuked one of the candidates contesting for the leadership, Frank Portelli, following comments made on gay rights and immigration.
Portelli said 80 per cent of migrants in Malta should be sent away and that gay men could marry straight women, have children and walk away.
The PN said that its policy on migration is that each and every person deserves respect and that the party is in favour of tolerance and against racism. Any comment that can raise xenophobic sentiments are against the principles and values of the party.
The PN said that every person deserves respect irrespective of sexual orientation, and any comment that could raise a homophobic sentiment goes against party principles.
The PN said all contestants should remember that the role of a party leader is to follow the principles and values listed in the party statute.
