A total of 49 individuals were charged with pedophilia in 2016, an increase of 30 when compared to 2013, Minister for Home Affairs Micahel Farrugia revealed when answering a parliamentary question tabled before him by PL MP Glenn Bedingfield.
Of these 49, 42 were men and 7 were women, while 41 were Maltese and 8 were foreign.
As of September 2017, there have 30 individuals charged with pedophilia this year so far (24 Maltese, 6 local); of these 30, 26 were men and 4 were women.
The statistics are as follows:
2013: 19 total; 14 Maltese (all male); 5 Foreign (all male)
2014: 24 total; 20 Maltese (18 male, 2 female); 4 Foreign (3 male, 1 female)
2015: 31 total; 24 Maltese (21 male, 3 female); 7 Foreign (6 male, 1 female)
2016: 49 total; 41 Maltese (36 male, 5 female); 8 Foreign (6 male, 2 female)
2017: 30 total; 24 Maltese (21 male, 3 female); 6 Foreign (5 male, 1 female)
