Anthony Buttigieg becomes Partit Demokratiku leader, replacing Marlene Farrugia

Anthony Buttigieg has been appointed as leader of the Partit Demokratiku, replacing MP Marlene Farrugia.

The election, scheduled for Wednesday, was no longer required since the nominations for the various posts on the Executive Council were equal to the vacancies available, the party said in a statement.

Buttigieg, who was a founding member of the party, was proposed by outgoing leader Marlene Farrugia and seconded by Godfrey Farrugia.

Both will continue to be active members working closely with the new leader within the council, the PD said.

PD thanked Marlene Farrugia, describing her work as instrumental to the party.

This new executive council will be holding its first meeting next Wednesday where the executive council will be confirming the rest of the party's officials.

"It is the intention of the new council to strengthen further Partit Demokratiku's mission, purpose and activism."

The party reaffirmed its stand as "the party of good governance, sustainable development and constitutional reform, which has been one of its pledges since its beginning."

"The realities of the evolving political scenario calls for stability and a fresh outlook to a political reform. PD is the third national political force and has reached a milestone in recent political history by electing two of its members to Parliament. It will continue to remain outstandingly different, credible and provide that platform that inspires more confidence in Maltese politics through a team approach."
