Minister Joe Mizzi cleared of spreading false news

An article written by Energy Minister Joe Mizzi over ten years ago has been deemed not to have spread false news.

Minister Mizzi was cleared of charges filed by former Water Services Corporation Chairman Michael Falzon, He had accused the PN administration of looking for quick solutions to a water crisis.

The article had appeared back in 2007. Mizzi had argued that the PN government was desperately looking for non-existant quick solutions, after having ignored the water crisis for years.

The court noted that the case against the Times of Malta editor (the paper the article appeared on) had resulted in an acquittal.

The court noted that in order for the accusation of false news to be upheld, criminal intent and evidence that it caused public alarm had to be proven.

He noted that the prosecution did not produce evidence of any public unrest, or violence instigated by the article. The Minister was cleared of the charges.
