A 57-year-old truck driver was denied bail after appearing in court this morning. Marius Camilleri stood accused of 11 different offences related to his dangerous driving. Camilleri's reckless driving was caught on video in three separate occasions and the footage was published on the media, going viral.
The court, presided by Magistrate Monica Vella, heard how the man drove his truck without a licence and displayed a licence for a 125 cc motorbike for a 35-tonne truck. The prosecution explained that Camilleri is well known to the police with a criminal record of almost 40 convictions in 23 years. His court history includes driving without a licence or insurance, theft and violence against the police. The man was also conditionally discharged following previous court sessions.
The police inspector prosecuting in the case told the court that it was hard to call the man to court through summons as his identity card allegedly showed the wrong house address.
Camilleri was arrested by the police after being spotted by wardens.
Inspector Sergio Pisani said that the man clearly has no respect for authority. He also noted that the accused failed to cooperate with the police. The defence argued that the police had the man's address since he signed the bail book daily at the Qormi police station and requested bail for the man.
The court decided to turn down the request for bail arguing that the man's maniacal behaviour could get someone injured.
Lawyer Leslie Cuschieri appeared for the accused.
