Cabinet recommends temporary release for kidney transplant patient behind bars

The Cabinet has decided to recommend the temporary release of a renal patient who underwent a kidney transplant back in 2014.

Christopher Bartolo, 37, was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in April after he was caught with 167 grams of cannabis. He had been arrested right after spending six hours hooked up to a dialysis machine at Mater Dei hospital

A statement by the Justice Ministry read that Cabinet will recommend his release pending the outcome of a court appeal he filed. Said decision was taken due to his medical condition, the statement continued, and the release will be conditional on Bartolo not leaving his home unless in specific circumstances.

Some years back, Bartolo had to undergo a kidney transplant surgery due to his failing kidney. He previously stated that cannabis helped him to ease the pain and allow to sleep properly after the medication he was prescribed failed to have the desired effect.
