Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the Um el Faroud Libyan tanker tragedy.
On February 3, 1995, nine men lost their lives as the 3,148-tonne tanker exploded in Dock 3, at the Malta Drydocks.
The General Workers Union Secretary General went to the memorial in Cospicua, and highlighted that this was one of the worst workplace tragedies Malta ever witnessed.
He said that this tragedy left an impact on the victim's families, as well as other employees who were injured.
It was a sad time, he said, adding that year after year "we remember this tragedy, and remember those who passed away. Our thoughts are not only with the families of the victims, but also with families who have lost a loved one while they were carrying out their jobs."
He spoke of the need to always remain vigilant about perils on the workplace, and asked the authorities to ensure they do all they can to enforce good practices and look towards health and safety at the workplace.
He mentioned that the Drydocks are now in the hands of foreign operators, "who are making it difficult for workers to benefit from free and fair trade union representation."
