Moped thief jailed seven months, fined €2,800

A 32-year-old man from Valletta has been jailed for seven months and fined €2,800 after pleading guilty to stealing a moped.

Janis Caruana was charged with the aggravated theft of a Piaggio Runner, as well as handling stolen goods and driving the vehicle without the owner's permission.

He had also been charged with driving without a license but this was later dropped after it transpired that the man had a license but had not renewed it.

Caruana was also charged with driving the moped without a license disc, altering the registration plate, driving without insurance and breaching bail conditions for a previous offence.

Inspector Kylie Borg, prosecuting, said the moped was reported stolen in August and Caruana had admitted to stealing it, swapping its number plates with others from a scrapped vehicle.

He was arrested in January but was released on police bail after claiming he was not on bail for other offences, which was not the case.

He told the police that he was not aware he was not on bail but would "go and sign a bail book anyway."

Caruana pleaded guilty to the charges and was jailed for seven months and fined €2,800.

The court also ordered the revocation of this bail from the previous case and the confiscation of a €5,000 personal guarantee.  It also disqualified him from driving for six months.

Inspector Kylie Borg prosecuted. Lawyers Veronique Dalli, Dean Hili and Andrew Saliba appeared for the accused.
