Number of unemployed persons in Malta at risk of poverty below EU average in 2016

The number of unemployed persons in Malta that were at risk of poverty placed below the European Union average in 2016, a report published by the EU statistics body on Monday shows.

That year, 48.7 per cent of unemployed persons within EU countries (between ages 16 and 64) were found to be at risk of poverty, whilst in Malta 44.2 per cent were at risk of poverty.

This figure placed Malta in 8th position out of all EU countries. Finland and Cyprus recorded the best scenario with 37.4 per cent. On the other end of the scale Germany ranked last, with 70.8 per cent of unemployed citizens being at the risk of poverty, followed by Lithuania at 60.5 per cent.

Last September, the National Statistics Office published a report that showed that the number of households whose equivalised income is below the at-risk-of-poverty line in 2016 increased by 0.2 per cent over the previous year. On the other hand, the rate of severe material deprivation decreased by 3.7 per cent.

"Over the past ten years, the proportion of unemployed persons at risk of poverty has risen continually, from 41.5 per cent in 2006 to 48.7 per cent in 2016," the report states.
