The Planning Authority today approved an application to turn the Embassy complex in Valletta into a four star hotel, which will include some commercial space.
The site consists of the Embassy Complex, namely a corner building having a frontage on Santa Lucija street and Strait street in Valletta.
The architect said that this will be the first four star hotel in Valletta.
The case officers report notes that "minimal external interventions are going to be affected and the main design of the façades is envisaged to remain identical, with the exception of the introduction of windows. The façades will be retained and internally, from the first floor upwards, the main structure will be retained, but all the partitions and floors are going to be totally replaced."
The ground floor will include the hotel's reception and a commercial area. The first floor will see eight hotel rooms, a multi-purpose hall and a bar area, in addition to, according to the plans, a central courtyard. Levels two to six will see guest rooms installed, and level seven will see an indoor heated pool constructed, and will house the breakfast and bar area, which will include outdoor seating. In total there will be 82 rooms.
The hotel entrance will be from Strait street, while entrance to the commercial premises will remain on St Lucija street.
The case officer recommended the case for approval., and said that no further contribution for a parking provision is needed as a hotel requires fewer parking spaces than the current commercial building.
The board heard how there will be a slight rise in building level given slight modifications that will take place, but the building itself will be lower than the current existing building due to the removal of services currently found on the roof which include, for example, air conditioning plants etc (which were needed for the large commercial space and cinemas), thus stating that the building visual size will reduce when compared with the current one. The members recommended that the screening of the backside of the site's roof be improved (as some services will be retained), and the issue was included as a reserved matter.
The board approved the application.
A separate application will later be filed for cinemas to be created below ground level, in an already existing area. the applicant's representatives told The Malta Independent.
