The Education Ministry has once again reiterated that Maltese as a foreign language will not be taught to Maltese students.
This comes after the National Council of the Maltese Language stated that Maltese as a foreign language should never be taught to Maltese students earlier in the day.
The Ministry responded that there is still a wrong impression that Maltese as a foreign language will be taught to Maltese students, which has already been confirmed in previous statements by the ministry.
Furthermore the National Council of the Maltese language have affirmed that the qualification of Maltese as a foreign language will not be regarded to the same level (MQF 3) of a Maltese O-level of Matsec.
The Ministry responded that the Minister believes that since student in schools can already study other languages as foreign languages at a level 3, than Maltese as a foreign language should not be treated as inferior.
Foreign students should be given the same opportunities to study Maltese just like any other foreign language of MQF level 3 or equivalent according to the European Community of teaching foreign languages, the ministry concluded.
