Electrogas, the consortium running the gas-fired power station at Delimara, said it believes its IT systems might have been breached and has filed a police report.
The company issued a statement after newsrooms taking part in the Daphne Project, including Times of Malta, said energy experts had flagged concerns about the LNG deal, which is allegedly costing the country tens of millions. The reports said Malta could have saved millions had it gone directly to the supplier, rather than buying gas through Azeri state-owned company Socar, which is a part of the Electrogas consortium.
Reacting, Electrogas said it had been selected to construct and operate the Malta LNG to Power Project following an open competitive process and the subsequent successful award of the tender.
"All project agreements and arrangements have been subject to the highest degree of scrutiny including specific vetting and subsequent approval, at European Commission level, which confirmed that the rate of return was in line with similar projects. Furthermore, all company activities have always been conducted with the utmost transparency, professionality and legitimacy. In addition, the activities of ElectroGas Malta Limited do not include the trading of LNG – its sole business is the provision of safe and reliable gas-powered electricity to Enemalta plc," the company said.
"Furthermore, following a thorough investigation of its internal systems, ElectroGas Malta Limited has become aware of a possible breach to its IT system. While all security measures and standard protocols have been followed to address a situation of this nature, the full extent, motivation and specific details of the breach are, as yet, unknown. After consulting its legal advisors on the matter, ElectroGas Malta Limited has filed a report with the Cyber Crime Unit within the Malta Police Force. This is being done in the interest of protecting any confidential information pertaining to the company, its staff, and any suppliers or third parties, which information ElectroGas Malta Limited is, in duty bound, to protect in terms of law."
