New police cars launched in front of Mellieha police station, but locality won’t get any

Some ten new police cars were inaugurated on Friday morning in front of the Mellieha police station, which was desperately in need of a new police vehicle, but the locality ended up getting an 'old' car in the end.

On Friday morning PN MP and Whip Robert Cutajar said that after a PQ he had filed some months ago, the Mellieha and Qawra stations were getting brand new police cars.

Cutajar had complained that the Mellieha police station was often being left without a squad car because of frequent breakdowns. He asked whether the Mellieha station could get some new cars.

Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia had replied that repairs are carried out in the shortest possible time, adding that the police force was planning on purchasing new vehicles. The minister had said that these new cars would be distributed among the districts according to the exigencies of the force.

The cars were meant to be inaugurated on 18 April but the event was scrapped when claims that the Economy Minister Chris Cardona meeting a murder suspect at a Siggiewi bar came out as part of the Daphne Project.

The event was held on Friday morning instead, but this time round the media was not invited.

The new Fiat cars were lined up in a pedestrian area in front of the Mellieha police station for the launch.

Cutajar had initially lauded the government for heeding to his call and buying the new vehicles. But the PN MP was left fuming when he was later informed that the Mellieha station would not be getting one of the new cars after all.

He said the government had taken Mellieha residents for a ride because the locality was only getting one of the 'old' Ford cars (above).

Cutajar said the government was "insulting people's intelligence", adding that the ministers "have no shame."
