PN Leader Adrian Delia said that the Prevention of Corruption in Sport Bill will help clean up sports in Malta.
Parliament was discussing the aforementioned bill, which is aimed at updating the provisions of Maltese law in respect of the fight against corruption in sport.
Delia, during his intervention, mentioned that corruption in sport is not just matchfixing, and said that foreign organised criminals try to make money off it. "Why should a person in Asia bet big money on a Maltese third division match," he asked.
He said that corruption ruins sport and pierces the values sports try to instill.
He said that children and sportspersons are becoming victims of organised crime.
The PN Leader said that this bill was a long-time in the making, and that both sides have worked on it. He said that widespread consultation occurred with all stakeholders.
He mentioned how players who were not paid in the past would fall into the temptation of the money being offered, and how they would be manipulated so that people abroad would play a substantial amount of money on those games.
