Police deny Russian whistleblower was interrogated in presence of Pilatus Bank representatives

The police today categorically denied statements made by Russian whistleblower Maria Efimova that representatives of Pilatus Bank were present during her interrogation by Malta police.

Efimova told Greek newspaper Kathimerini that the officers who interrogated her had said that they were friends of the bank "and they even pressured me to apologise to the bank executives they had brought to the police station."

The Malta Independent on Sunday yesterday quoted parts of the Greek report, which said that there is no pending arrest warrant against Maria Efimova. Cypriot authorities have attempted to lodge a Red Notice for the Russian, but Interpol's general secretariat dismissed the request saying the evidence submitted had been insufficient.

In its statement today, the police referred to media articles where "Maria Efimova is alleging that during an interrogation held in Malta in August 2016 two Police Officers, mistreated her, pushed her, and took her mobile phone while two Pilatus Bank executives were present. Efimova is also claiming that during the mentioned interrogation, the police officers pressured her to apologise to the bank executives.

"The Police Force categorically deny all the claims made by Efimova and also strongly deny that any representatives of the bank mentioned were present during the interrogation."
