Harsher fines announced for littering, public consultation on new regulations launched

Environment Minister Jose Herrera has and Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Silvio Parnis today launched a four week public consultation period for proposed amendments to the littering regulation, which, among other things, will see increased fines for littering.

Minister Herrera explained that the proposals oblige citizens to take out the correct garbage bag on the correct day, and not, for example, take out a grey bag on a black bag collection day, otherwise a fine would be imposed. In addition, citizens would not be allowed to take out the garbage more than four hours before collection time.

This, he said, is the first step before forced waste separation at source is introduced.

He spoke of the introduction of harsher fines, and in cases of dumping on Natura 2,000 sites, even harsher penalties apply.
