Housing issues coming from societal, demographic changes – Minister Falzon

Pressures on Malta's housing sector have stemmed from demographic and societal changes in Malta, with the influx of foreign workers, increased separations of couples and people choosing to leave the family home earlier, Social Solidarity Minister Michael Falzon said in Parliament.

He was speaking during a Parliamentarian debate on the €110 million Housing Authority budget estimates for 2018.

Labour Party (PL) MP Edward Zammit Lewis echoed Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's statements made during Labour Day celebrations where he called for the curbing of abuse on social housing so as to ensure the resource is distributed more fairly.

Falzon called for a rethink on 'entitlements', stressing that old systems will be maintained but added that the passing on of social housing to family members in particular circumstances.

He stressed that the country is passing through challenges due to the growing economies which are increasing demand while supply is not managing to keep up. He highlighted the number of government schemes such as social loans, loans to refurbish dilapidated buildings and the social housing construction projects are crucial.

PN MP Claudio Grech called for conditions of existing social housing units to be improved in order to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable.
