The once proud and formidable Fort Ricasoli, with its illustrious layers of history, has been reduced to a pitiful shambles, crying out for basic attention and should it not be cared for and restored immediately, the country shall lose this unique treasure forever, Partit Demokratiku said in a statement.
The abject squalor of its surroundings compounds the general feeling of utter neglect and carelessness, with parts of it crumbling into the sea.
The fort has, for many years, served commercial interests as a mainstay in the film industry which generated millions in turnover. Sadly, in the process, the fort lost many original features, and revenue generated from filming was diverted elsewhere.
It is our collective shame that facets of our rich heritage are allowed to sink into such levels of disrepair when our country is experiencing an economic boom and our government boasts of a surplus.
PD expressed its solidarity with Assocjazzjoni Wirt il-Kalkara in its appeal to the government that the decadence needs to be stopped immediately and the necessary restoration started to halt and reverse the damage using structural funds from the EU. It is our duty to preserve our heritage and pass it on intact for future generations to enjoy and benefit from its existence.
