The Government of Malta and the Nippon Foundation of Japan signed a Memorandum of Understanding for an enhanced co-operation on international issues pertaining the oceans and the environment.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Nippon Foundation of Japan, represented by Mitsuyuki Unno, Executive Director, in the presence of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation in Tokyo, Japan.
Conscious that the oceans' ecological well-being is essential for humanity and mindful that the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, known as the Constitution for the oceans, remains the cornerstone of global ocean governance through the Memorandum of Understanding, Malta and The Nippon Foundation endeavour to work together on matters concerning oceans as well as other areas of mutual interest.
The Nippon Foundation and Malta share the same vision for more integrated global ocean governance.
This was confirmed during a meeting held between the Prime Minister and Mr Sasakawa. During the meeting, attended by Minister Carmelo Abela and MP Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, the Prime Minister said, "As a maritime nation at heart, Malta's foreign policy efforts are geared towards the further development of international ocean governance and in this regard, it will be important to strengthen our cooperation. Malta believes that emerging issues such as the sustainable use of the oceans and their resources, as well as linkages between natural sciences, socio-economic requirements, and the law, necessitate a multidisciplinary approach on ocean governance".
The Nippon Foundation, established in 1962, based in Tokyo, Japan, is a private, non-profit grant-making organisation. The foundation's mission is aimed towards philanthropic activities and uses funds to pursue global maritime development and assistance for humanitarian work both at home and abroad. In the humanitarian field, it focuses on such fields as social welfare, public health, and education.
Everyone has a role to play: citizens, corporations, non-profit organisations, governments, and international bodies. By forging networks among these actors, The Nippon Foundation serves as a hub for the world's wisdom, experience, and human resources, giving individuals the capacity to change society - the hope that they can make a difference.
