An application to renew permission to demolish a silo and reconstruct vaults at the Malta Maritime Museum has been filed.
Original permission was granted in 2012, however it seems the works were not completed and a renewal application had to be filed. The site is at Ix-Xatt Tal-Birgu.
In the 2012 application the case officer had said, in his report, that the aim is to restore the internal architectural spaces in this area through the reconstruction of the original vaults which were demolished to make way for one of six grain silos built in the 1930s. "At ground and first floor levels, the vaults will be reconstructed, while timber beams and stone slabs shall constitute the roofing system at second floor level as per the building's original design."
"The removal of this silo will contribute to the overall rehabilitation of the building as it will provide additional functional space for the museum. Such additional space is needed to house the various exhibits in hand and for the improvement of the museum's operation. In addition, the original configuration and architecture of these halls will be reinstated. It is also to be noted that other examples of grain silos currently form part of the building and these will not be tampered with in order to conserve physical evidence of this massive intervention during the course of the building's history," the case officer had said in 2012.
The same case officer had also said that the proposed development was considered acceptable as the proposed interventions would increase the amenities of the application site while aiding in its long term preservation and respecting the character and architecture of the building.
The case officer had recommended that the application be approved, and the board followed this recommendation.
