GWU speaks out against xenophobic statements

The General Workers Union (GWU) has praised the economic growth Malta is currently seeing, and said that they are outraged by some people who are sharing far right ideas trying to package them as traditional values, or love for one's country.

They said that this kind of language is being used to create fear and hatred towards foreigners who came to live in Malta, and are working in the country.

Discourse which promotes selective immigration, or makes a distinction between foreign workers based on whether they are coming from Europe, Asia or Africa, is dangerous, the GWU said.

The GWU said that the political class has the responsibility to present facts to the people, and not ones built on conjecture of what we wish to be the reality. Speeches which paint foreigners as persons who are pushing wages downwards is a far cry from reality for the simple reason that where workers form part of a union there can never be discrimination in terms of wages given to Maltese or foreign workers.

The GWU said that its agreements never make a distinction between gender, sexual orientation, religion, or nationality.

"Collective agreements address remuneration for workers according to the type of work they undertake and not who they are. This is why it makes sense for the GWU's proposal for every worker to form part of a trade union of their choice be adopted."

The GWU argues that discriminatory and xenophobic speeches erode social cohesion.
