The Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) issued 330,936 contraventions last year, which is 14,228 more than were issued in 2016.
PN MP Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici asked a Parliamentary Question this evening, requesting government to provide statistics as to the number of traffic contraventions issued by LESA since its creation. Justice Minister Owen Bonnici tabled the statistics in response.
The contraventions were issued for a number of offences, including those related to parking, over speeding, disobeying traffic signs, using mobile phones, littering, traffic light infringements, overloading, infringements related to animals and many others.
The largest number of infringements issued dealt with parking ( totalling 105,755 in 2017).
Statistics for January to May 2018 were also provided. Within this period, LESA issued a total of 123,902 contraventions. Again, the majority (43,126) were related to parking issues.
