Corinthia owners apply to renew development at Hal Ferh complex

An application to renew the permission for the construction of a tourism village at Hal Ferh has been filed with the Planning Authority.

Island Hotels Limited, the company that runs the Corinthia Group, had acquired the perpetual emphyteusis for Hal Ferh through a tender back in March 2010, for €12 million.

The original application, which was accepted back in 2014, read: "The Hal-Ferh Redevelopment Project aims to replace the existing derelict Hal Ferh Tourist Complex into a high quality low-lying and low-density tourist resort that complements the sensitive surrounding landscape. The proposed vacation resort will include a total of 228 (beds) units with ancillary facilities including restaurant, small convenience shop, pools and bars, spa and underground parking facilities totalling to 293 parking spaces."

The site is located in the coastal rural area within the Pwales Valley at the south-western part of the Mellieha Local Council area. The site lies to the east of the popular sandy beach of Golden Bay, Radisson SAS Golden Sands Resort and the Golden Sands public car park.

The 2014 case officer's report reads that the total proposed footprint taken up by the project configuration totals to 17,000sqm. "The proposed footprint taken up by the Hal Ferh Redevelopment Project is still in the 20% site coverage margin." The amount of total developable floorspace was marginally larger than the amount allowed in the development brief for the area.

The project had been approved back in 2014.
