Manchester City's grip on the Premier League title loosened even more after a 2-1 loss at Newcastle on Tuesday, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's record winning run as Manchester United manager ended at home to Burnley despite a late rally to draw.
With second-place City losing for the fourth time this season, Liverpool can move seven points clear by beating Leicester on Wednesday as the team bids to become English champion for the first time since 1990.
Sergio Aguero gave City the lead after just 24 seconds — the quickest goal in the league this season — only for the defending champions to concede twice in the second half against an injury-hit team that started the game one point above the relegation zone.
Solskjaer was looking to become the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a team but United could only draw 2-2 against Burnley, another team fighting relegation. United needed late goals from Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof to rescue a point.
United missed the chance to move level on points with fourth-place Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
In its first match since the disappearance of its new striker Emilano Sala, Cardiff lost 2-1 at Arsenal on an emotional night at Emirates Stadium.
There were also wins for Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham.
