During the public discussion "L-Ewropa fis-Suq mal-MEPs Maltin", Member of the European Parliament Marlene Mizzi stressed that MEPs should always work in the interest of their citizens and country. The event, organised by the Office of the European Parliament in Malta and MEUSAC at Is-Suq tal-Belt, gathered Maltese MEPs, MEP candidates and the public.
The debate focused on three main themes: the future of Europe, citizens' rights and young people. These themes have been identified from the last Eurobarometer survey as well as in reports published by the European Parliament.
Whilst confirming her decision not to contest the European Parliament elections, Mizzi emphasised that all candidates should put the citizens' interest at the centre of their work.
"We are representing the people and our country. I encourage all European elections candidates to focus their campaign on what they can achieve and deliver to the country and its citizens on a European platform, rather than on personal insults, bickering and useless arguments. Those elected in the European Parliament will be representing Maltese and Gozitan citizens and Malta, and hence they have the duty to work for the good of our people and in the interest of our country, and not to damage them."
During the discussion the Maltese Members of the European Parliament had the opportunity to answer questions made by the moderator and the public.
Another issue which concerned the participants was the fact that many citizens are not informed about the work done in Brussels and Strasbourg.
"The future of Europe depends from if and how will the EU manage to reach its citizens. Many times information about the important work done in the European Parliament does not reach the people. These shortcomings result in Europeans who do not appreciate and understand well enough what is being negotiated and decided on their behalf. However, it takes two to tango, and citizens should also seek to keep themselves informed," said MEP Mizzi.
MEP Marlene Mizzi said that the EU should work more on issues which could improve the citizens' everyday life. Mizzi led and negotiated historic legislations like the abolition of roaming charges and cheaper phonecalls in the EU - which are making a real difference to millions of Europeans, as well as legislations she piloted like the important Single Digital Gateway.
"The EU belongs to European citizens and so it should offer them hope and protection, and above all, it should put the people at the centre of all its projects and decisions. I intend doing so till the very last day of my mandate," said MEP Mizzi.
