There is no-one better than Adrian Delia to lead the Nationalist Party at this moment in time, his right hand man Pierre Portelli said.
Writing on Facebook, Portelli says the PN does not belong to its leader, MPs, officials or its media. Neither does it belong to the bloggers who think they should have an exclusive hold on the party. The PN belongs to Nationalists and to all those who do not want to be part of the Labour Party, and who want another home they can go to as they did in the past, Portelli said.
Portelli sprang in defence of his party leader in the wake of accusations being levelled at Delia following the separation case instituted by his estranged wife.
Portelli said that he has known Delia for a long time and worked closely with him in the last 18 months. He said it was difficult to keep up with the enthusiasm Delia generated and his will to help one and all, irrespective of their political allegiance. He took matters in his own hands whenever there was a need to help someone, and did not rely on any assistant in search of solutions.
He added that Delia humbly did not try to influence discussions to reach his target but always defended other people's right to be heard.
Portelli said he did not want to express himself on the personal issues Delia is facing, only saying that some people are taking advantage of the situation to say that Delia is no longer up to leading the party. This is not the case, Portelli said. In spite of his personal issues, Delia has remained focused on national issues including the fight against corruption, the defence of life, freedom of expression, poverty, the need for a long-term plan for education and the fight against hatred.
Portelli said he retains the confidence he has in Delia now in as he did when he (Portelli) decided to leave the private sector and embark, with Delia, on a battle to fight the culture of impunity the government endorses.
