The Addolorata Cemetery is going through a process of restoration and an extension that will see the creation of space for 1,338 new graces, Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne told Parliament on Wednesday.
Fearne was answering a parliament question by Government Whip Byron Camilleri.
Fearne said that the Addolorata Cemetery has been in a state of abandonment for far too long and is in desperate need for restoration. He said that it is the biggest cemetery in Malta with a waiting list for 1,338 graves.
He explained that restoration work had begun back in 2012, yet was abandoned just a year later. He said that now there are new plans and works going on at the Addolorata Cemetery to make sure that those on the waiting list for a grave will be satisfied.
He explained that currently there is a consultation process on the introduction of cremation, adding that the Parliamentary debate on the matter will start in April.
