395 cases of use of falsified passports, 81 cases of use of other person’s passport since 2013

There have been 395 cases of foreign persons found using a falsified passport between 2013 and February 2019, information tabled in parliament on Monday revealed.

Asked by PN MP Karol Aquilina about the subject, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia revealed that there were 395 such cases, 7 of which occurred this year.

There were 70 cases in 2013, 43 in 2014, 101 in 2015, 51 in 2016, 72 in 2017, and 51 in 2018.  In total, 343 were men and 52 were women.

The nationalities of those accused were numerous Farrugia said, and included Afghans, Albanians, Congolese, Ivoirians, Egyptians, Eritreans, Ethiopians, Iranians, Libyans, Malians, Nigerians, Serbians, Somalis, Sudanese, Syrians, Turks, Gambians, Russians, Colombians, Bosnians, and Lebanese among others.

Between 2013 and the end of February this year, there were 81 people who were accused of using or trying to make use of a passport issued to someone else, the minister revealed in a separate Parliamentary Question.

Data tabled in Parliament shows the nationality, age, sex and eventual sentence handed down in each of the cases of those accused.

In total, 24 Somalis, 8 Malians, 7 Syrians, 6 Ghanaians, 6 Iranians, 6 Nigerians, 5 Gambians, two each from Senegal, the Republic of Congo, Palestine, Ivory Coast, Iraq, and the Philippines, and one each from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Guinea, Georgia, Ukraine, and Guinea Bissau.

71 of those accused were male, while the remaining 10 were female.  Three were given a conditional discharge, 54 a suspended sentence, and the remaining 24 were handed jail terms of varying lengths.
