Male quarters at San Blas Therapeutic Community Centre undergo major refurbishment

A major restoration project is taking place at the male quarters at San Blas Therapeutic Community Centre in the limits of Zebbug.

The San Blas Centre residents follow residential drug rehabilitation programmes and find a safe environment to heal and develop psychologically and socially.

The project will be fully funded by the Marigold Foundation with additional financial support from Bank of Valletta.

Anthony Gatt, Caritas Director said that the refurbishment of the male quarters is to have a positive impact on the psychology of residents. "The refurbished premises will also allow for increasing capacity and making the premises fully accessible." He explained how previously to the refurbishment the premises lacked privacy and that the new refurbished premises will highlight on the growth of the individual. He also added that currently the quarters can cater for 18 people, which after the refurbishment will increase to 24 residents.

The building has been used for this purpose for the past 30 years and goes back to the time of the British forces' presences in Malta. The architects who took on the project of redesigning the male quarters, Karl Ebejer and Jessica Vella from ME Architects explained how they had one to one sessions with the residences to ask them how and what could be done to improve the area. "We focused on creating a space that has a positive effect on the psychology and mood of the residences. We focused on the importance of privacy and creating accessibility for them.

Michelle Muscat, Chairperson of Marigold Foundation said that Caritas has always been a top priority for the Foundation. She said that throughout the past five years the Foundation has focused its work on giving people a second chance and to empower people to achieve their goals. "We are looking forward to be of support in this long term project and to offer our personal time to build friendships with the residents who might feel ostracised from society.""
