New 30,000 square metre SR Technics hanger to be completed by 2020

SR Technics will be expanding their capacity of services through the building of a new 30,000 square metre hangar which is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.

The hangar will allow the company, which moved operations to Malta eight years ago, to cater for six narrow-body aircraft, with the focus initially being on handling aircraft from the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families.

The expansion will cost €40 million and result in the employment of a further 350 workers to join SR Technics already 300-strong workforce.

Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony at Park Four in Luqa, where the hangar will be built, the company's general manager Arthur Magri thanked Malta Enterprise and Malta Industrial Parks and said that this expansion was part of the company's long term growth strategy.  The creation of this "centre of excellence" will offer higher quality service at a good rate and a shorter turnaround.

Minister for Economy, Investment and Small Businesses Chris Cardona said that the aviation sector is growing rapidly worldwide, propelled by a booming tourism sector and lower airfares and the need for greater and easier connectivity.

Cardona said that the demand for air transport is expected to increase by 4.3% per annum in the next 20 years.  This means that Malta will have an even more important role to play as the aviation industry continues to swell, Cardona said.

The minister said that in the past month, Malta Industrial Parks has been drafting a master plan for the areas around the airport and other strategic locations which, he said, should give a clearer picture for what land, amenities and facilities are needed to keep solidifying Malta's position within the aviation industry.

SR Technics is currently utilising a temporary hangar, which took six months to build, in the Safi Aviation Park to carry out maintenance works on aircraft until this new hangar is completed.
