Partit Demokratiku today thanked outgoing President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca while welcoming George Vella to the role.
Partit Demokratiku will however not be present during this evening's Parliamentary debate by the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader once Government did not show the goodwill to amend the Constitution to appoint the President by a two-thirds majority.
"Malta has a dysfunctional democracy and Presidents of the Republic in their majority have been merely figureheads in their relative silence," stated Party Leader Hon Godfrey Farrugia. "Presidents must be given the necessary powers to ensure good governance and have an Institution such as a Council of State, which would be made up of individuals whose role would be to advise the President," he further added.
"The bottom line is that if good actually reigned in our collective political presence, then a President that epitomises the widest representation, fairness and trustworthiness would not need a two-thirds clause to force the Prime Minister's hand into choosing an acceptable figure if MPs had the psychological freedom to rise above partisan pressures," stated Hon Marlene Farrugia.
"We will continue to seek a less tribal democracy which works in the genuine interest of all Maltese and Gozitans, rather than party loyalists. That is why the party will not be present for the debate on the next President," states General Secretary and MEP candidate Martin Cauchi Inglott.
Partit Demokratoku noted that we are living in times where an example needs to be given from above, and which the Establishment is failing to give, out of fear of destroying itself.
