Cesare Maldini, first Italian to lift Champions Cup trophy, dies aged 84

Cesare Maldini, who became the first Italian to lift the Champions Cup trophy when he led Milan to a 2-1 triumph over Benfica in the 1963 final played at Wembley Stadium, has died aged 84, Italian media report.

Maldini was born in Trieste in 1932 and made his debut for Triestina aged 21. He later joined Milan for which club he played until 1966. Apart from the Champions Cup, he also won four league titles.

He turned to coaching and was assistant to Enzo Bearzot when Italy won the World Cup in 1982. He led the Italy Under 21 side to three consecutive European titles before taking over the national team between 1996 and 1998.

He became top scout for Milan before briefly taking over as coach of Milan during which tenure Milan thrashed their city rivals 6-0 in an unforgettable match. He led Paraguay to the 2002 World Cup finals.

Cesare Maldini is the father of the more famous Paolo Maldini, who 40 years after his father lifted the Champions League trophy in Manchester when Milan beat Juventus on penalties in the 2003 final.
