Illegal Montekristo Estate tower is being demolished

A replica of the de Redin tower that forms part of construction magnate Charles Polidano's Montekristo Estate is being demolished, his construction firm announced today.  The Planning Authority had insisted on Montekristo Estate's Falcon Tower being demolished and had declined Mr Polidano's offer of passing it on to an NGO, Polidano Group said in a statement. Montekristo Estate has been described as "one of Malta's largest illegal sites", with large swathes of it having been illegally built despite a public outcry. In November 2013 Mr Polidano had personally written to the Prime Minister to "confirm that no works will be undertaken on the site in question and apologise for any inconvenience". Nine months later works recommenced.  The estate's animal park - also built illegally - has also been the site of two separate animal attacks in the past year. In November 2015 a three-year-old boy was attacked by a tiger, while earlier this month a five-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries caused by a lion. The park was meant to be closed at the time.
