A foamy surface sludge "which stinks" has coated the sea in parts of Sliema this morning, according to witnesses. Photos sent to timesofmalta.com show a gelatinous white sludge in the sea close to the Surfside restaurant, one of the most popular beaches. The sludge has proved to be a headache throughout the summer, reaching areas like St Paul's Bay and Delimara. Many swimmers are convinced the slime emanates from nearby fish farms, with a fish farm owner recently admitting to the Times of Malta that the industry was polluting local shorelines.
