The Malta Freeport Corporation is analysing a number of development possibilities, including automation, as an alternative in order to remain competitive in light of the restrictions being mentioned.
Recently, the Prime Minister has said that he does not want any physical expansion of the Freeport, which resulted in the PN criticising this statement.
The Freeport Corporation released a statement today, mentioning that it is following what is being said, in order to evaluate its future and the future of all its workers.
"The Malta Freeport competes with much larger ports around the Mediterranean. Without continuous investment, the Freeport would lose its competitivity, which would result in less work".
The Corporation also said that a container ship "MSC Sveva" which is able to carry more than 19,000 containers today entered the Malta Freeport for the first time.
"This ship is one of the largest container ships in the world, and the largest to ever berth at the Malta Freeport".
"This was only possible through the vision, and continuous investment by the company in order to cater for ships of this size.
The Malta Freeport Corporation is also not pleased that it has been turned into a political football.
