The developers' lobby has raised the prospect of solar farms being created in Malta, saying a European Commission-approved scheme will make such projects possible. Malta plans to inject €140 million to help solar and wind energy operators grow over the next four years. The scheme, which was given the green light by the European Commission yesterday, is intended to increase the percentage of energy Malta generates from renewable sources. The approved scheme will take the form of a premium to be paid over and above the market price. Onshore wind developers can also apply for support if an eligible site receives development approval during the lifetime of the scheme. In a statement issued this morning, the Malta Developers' Association welcomed the scheme, saying photovoltaic systems larger than 1MW - solar farms - could now be developed. The MDA said it had held several in-depth discussions with various government entities, "including minister Konrad Mizzi."
