Archbishop Charles Scicluna used the nativity as an example to show the population the importance of accepting refugees in his Church's annual Christmas reception at the Curia.
"Joseph had to flee Israel and seek refuge in Egypt to save Jesus and his mother. Jesus took his first steps and lived his early years as a refugee," Scicluna said "This reminds us of the importance of the work carried out by civil society and the Maltese government in favour of the dignity of our brothers who have special needs."
The Archbishop praised the economic growth the country has experienced in the last couple of years, but echoing President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca's Republic Day speech, called on a greater and more just distribution of wealth amongst the community.
"We should respect eachother even when we disagree" The Archbishop said, which could be seen as a reference to political bickering the country has experienced over the last couple of months.
He also called on the population to be kinder to one another both on social media and every day interaction.
The Archbishop also took the opportunity to wish the government luck on the forthcoming EU Presidency which will begin on January 1.
