The Nationalist Party Forum for Equal Opportunities (FOIPN) has welcomed the fact that Parliament is discussing the law about equality in marriage, which, it says, "is a further step in the inclusion of the LGBTIQ community in the Maltese society.
The FOIPN also insisted that the inclusion of the LGBTIQ community should be given priority in every legislature.
"In the past years, the Forum held a number of discussions with non-government organisations so that we understand better the needs of the LGBTIQ community and as a political organ we have included several proposals."
FOIPN said it has "strived for inclusion in all sectors of society and also to eliminate any form of discrimination".
As for the draft marriage equality bill discussed in Parliament FOIPN noted how it excludes words such as 'wife', 'husband', 'mother' and 'father' which are being substituted by other terminology.
The group says, "We are aware that the elimination of the mentioned terminology goes against proper inclusion. Inclusion brings about more rights and not the elimination of certain rights. Therefore, we recommend that law reflects the wishes of all persons, couples and families."
FOIPN insisted that the Nationalist Party Parliamentary Group presents amendments at Committee stage and that government backs such amendments.
It added, "Inclusion is a long way starting from education, both formally in schools and informally outside schools and through mass media. We feel that the time is ripe that the country has a serious plan about this matter and we start implanting such plan. Education is the key for an open mind and a kind heart."
