Minister for Equality and EU Affairs Helena Dalli has officially launched her campaign for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. The launch was held near the Freedom Monument in Birgu. Commenting that the landmark is an important reminder of the Labour Party politics, she said: "This is a monument to political freedom, economic and social liberty.
"I am ready for the challenge ahead, with the Labour Party in a strong position, following a second consecutive election win. We achieved this, thanks to the leadership of Joseph Muscat, who understood that we needed change in the way we think and act."
She said that, in the same way that the Prime Minister had entrusted her with the remit that had belonged to Deputy Prime Minister Louis Grech, many people had encouraged her to take up the role of PL Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs. She said she had taken the final decision to contest while in Strasbourg with Prime Minister Muscat, who encouraged her to make the move.
Her 38 years of experience in the Party and 21 years in Parliament had, said Ms Dalli, been beneficial for the role of Deputy Leader. "I have experienced the party both in government and in Opposition."
She mentioned the importance of keeping the delegates informed as to what the government is doing because it is the delegates who approve the election programme.
Helena Dalli is one of the three contenders for the post of Deputy Prime Minister; Ministers Chris Fearne and Edward Scicluna have also submitted their application to occupy the position.
